  5. handicapper's  guide

  10.     Handicapping Hollywood hits has its perils and pleasures.
  11. If, 18 months ago, you had publicly predicted that the
  12. top-grossing pictures of 1990 would be Home Alone, Ghost, Pretty
  13. Woman and Dances with Wolves, you could now be running the major
  14. studio of your choice. If, like most everyone, you had put your
  15. money on megabudget action adventures, you could be Frank
  16. Mancuso, who doesn't run Paramount Pictures anymore. Starting
  17. this month, the movie industry puts its snazziest fashions on
  18. display. The only thing certain about the product is that there
  19. will be more of it -- 50 films, by one count, compared with 35
  20. last summer. In forecasting the winners, moviegoers and moguls
  21. will have five questions in mind:

  25.     WHO'S IN IT?
  26.  
  27.     Stars are brand names: they sell tickets because they are
  28. the people we want to see and be. So the received wisdom says
  29. Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves will be a summer smash, not
  30. because Americans want a fantasy history lesson set in 12th
  31. century England but because Kevin Costner is running the show.
  32. Costner has made so many left-field hits lately (baseball
  33. movies, even westerns) that Hollywood figures he can do no
  34. wrong. It wants to forget that in between Field of Dreams and
  35. Dances with Wolves, he detonated a minibomb called Revenge.

  39.     WILL IT MAKE 'EM LAUGH OR CRY?

  41.     Tears streaming down cheeks or a grin from ear to ear
  42. equals good word of mouth. Last summer's surprise smash Ghost
  43. got 50 million moviegoers suitably weepy. So this summer's early
  44. line favored Dying Young, the Julia Roberts sudser about a
  45. former Candy Striper who falls in love with a failing patient.
  46. Hollywood had two nicknames for the film: Pretty Nurse and Can't
  47. Miss. But now second thoughts may be spoiling the party. 20th
  48. Century Fox has postponed the movie until late summer, and
  49. there's talk of changing both the downbeat ending and the title.
  50. To what, Pretty Sick? No. Forever Young.

  52.     For Hollywood, dying is hard but comedy is easy. The
  53. original Saturday Night Live wires have frayed lately, but Bill
  54. Murray will open the season with this week's psycho farce, What
  55. About Bob? Billy Crystal will dude it up out West in City
  56. Slickers, Martin Short will bank on Pure Luck, and John Candy
  57. will go Delirious. The easiest hit to pick is a farce sequel,
  58. The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear.

  62.     WHEN DOES IT COME OUT?

  64.     Last year Goldie Hawn's Bird on a Wire got the Memorial
  65. Day jump on the competition and galloped to a $70 million
  66. gross; Total Recall, the first brawnbuster released last June,
  67. beat out its beefy competition. So an early start is helpful.
  68. This Memorial Day weekend, Hudson Hawk, with Bruce Willis as a
  69. reformed thief forced to commit one last heist, will try to
  70. shoulder out Backdraft, director Ron Howard's fireman-buddy epic
  71. starring Kurt Russell and Robert De Niro. Maybe those two films
  72. will duke it out all summer. Or maybe they will cream each
  73. other and leave space for late May's gal-buddy movie, Thelma and
  74. Louise, with Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. The success of T&L,
  75. or of Soapdish with Sally Field and Whoopi Goldberg, or of
  76. Warshawski with Kathleen Turner would mark the welcome
  77. infiltration of female-star vehicles in the boys' camp of summer
  78. movies.

  82.     HOW MUCH DID IT COST?

  84.     A movie budget shouldn't interest moviegoers; they pay the
  85. same ticket price for the cult hit Poison as they do for
  86. Godfather 3. But Hollywood went haywire last summer with action
  87. adventures, leaving the genre in a deep hole. And from that
  88. abyss crawls this year's budget behemoth, James Cameron's
  89. Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Arnold Schwarzenegger got a $14
  90. million jet as his salary, but even if he had worked for free,
  91. the movie would have cost more than $80 million, or about five
  92. times what the original Terminator brought its distributor. The
  93. early word is that the new picture is worth every penny, but
  94. movie execs dare to hope that T2 is the last of the spendthrift
  95. macho movies. It won't be.

  99.     THE HUH? FACTOR

  101.     As in, "I see that Home Alone is now the third
  102. highest-grossing picture of all time." Huh? Every summer has its
  103. sleepers. Even to list all the films that might be big this
  104. season, you'd need Marty McFly coming back from the future with,
  105. say, the Sept. 9 issue of Variety. So let's say The Rocketeer,
  106. Disney's no-star action fantasy, will ring the register. And
  107. Mike Nichols' Regarding Henry, with Harrison Ford as a lovelorn
  108. amnesiac. And Boyz N the Hood, a promising young director's
  109. first feature about gang bonding. And -- no, stop! This could
  110. take all summer.
